1 Corinthians - Research/Student Leadership Project

During our last quarter this year, there have been several leadership opportunities for you to experience at CCS:

1 Corinthians – Research and Student Leadership Project

In our study of 1 Corinthians you will become the teacher. You will be given a short passage in 1 Corinthians and will design a power point presentation to teach the class explaining the verses.  In addition, you will create a worksheet that the class will fill in during your Bible lecture.  

This will be a collaborative effort with one or more students working together on this project.  On Monday we will talk about the details and I will give you a sample worksheet that you will use as a guideline.

  The rest of the week we will be discussing and working on writing construction and skills.  In order  to say anything clearly we need two things:

In writing it is important to write sentences that are composed mostly of parts of sentence, with few modifiers.  Pick a strong noun as a direct object - one that does not need an adjective to rescue it.  This helps to write tight sentences and allows the main terms of thought to stand out clearly.

You got started on a research project to discover contributions to physics/chemistry by people unfamiliar to us.  After a very brief expression of panic, you got down to business and began to enjoy the challenge!  You have a rubric, which we as a class have modified a couple of times:  No essay is required!  Follow the rubric for the guidelines: power point with specific questions to research and present and an appropriate prop.  Presentation date is April 25.

In our final section study on 1 & 2 Thessalonians, we will discover the Godly characteristics of the Thessalonian church that made them an example to all the believers in Greece. As a result, we will draw meaningful personal applications from our study.

 This week we will review over coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.  We will go over and work with correlative conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs.  The students will incorporate correlative conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs into a simple writing project.  The rest of the week our focus will be on interjections and how they stand alone.  An interjection does not interact with other parts of speech. Students will diagram sentences and show the the different parts of speech and the relationships they participate in.  Examples:  a conjunction joins two words or two groups of words and a noun agrees with its verb.

This week we will learn about sound energy - compression and longitudinal waves that transport energy through a medium.  We will also identify properties of sound (amplitude, frequency, decibels, and pitch) and demonstrate sound vibrations using a variety of mediums.

Grammar   

This week we will continue to work with adverbs and adjectives becoming weak modifiers.  Each student will replace weak modifiers with strong and specific vocabulary words.  We will continue our group discussion about weak modifiers not providing useful information and becoming confusing and open to interpretation. 

Composition
Each student chose a type of essay (narrative, expository, persuasive, descriptive) and will be completing the essay this week.  Then they will be reading over what they wrote and editing it before submitting their final essay.

This week we will continue our study on Paul's letters to the early church.  Our new unit will focus on 1 & 2 Thessalonians.  Since each chapter of 1 Thessalonians contains a reference to Christ's second coming/return, our key Scripture verse will be:

This week we will finish working on our verbisections exercise.  We have been working with verbs and making observations about how the verb is used in the sentence.  Later in the week, we will begin to work with adverbs and adjectives.  Each student will construct a short essay and monitor if they are using weak modifiers such as very, long, little, slowly, greatly, etc.  These weak modifiers do not provide useful information and can be confusing and open to interpretation.  When using modifiers, each student needs to ask himself/herself if you are using too many. With this essay, each student will be encouraged to use strong and specific vocabulary.

This week we will be studying and discussing the three moods tenses can appear in:

 indicative, imperative and subjunctive.

We will talk about how the mood shows the writer’s attitude toward what she/he is saying. Each student will construct several sentences that use each of these moods.  

 

Later in the week, the students will learn how mood is only one of many verb properties.  

We will go over tense, aspect and voice.

This week we are learning about batteries - how do they work? What is necessary for the electricity to be generated?  We plan to create several batteries, such as a lemon battery and a potato battery.

Research Paper and Class Presentation   -   ‘The Fruit of the Spirit’

Parents and Students,

While our overarching study in our Bible class this year is the beginning and development of the early church, our spring semester will now focus specifically on several of the epistles Paul wrote to the churches.   Galatians is the first letter our class has been studying.  Within this epistle to the believers in the province of Galatia resides a Scripture passage best known as ‘The Fruit of the Spirit’.

Galatians 5:22-23 (New Living Translation – NLT)

                  But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives:

                  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

                  gentleness, and self-control.  There is no law against these things!

To grasp the relevance and personal application that can be drawn from this portion of Scripture, our students will be given one ‘Spirit’ quality and .  .  .

1.    Complete a 1 page Research Synopsis  

2.    Write a 1 – 2 page research paper (using the Research Synopsis as a guide for the

information required in the research paper)

3.    Prepare a  5 – 10 minute oral presentation based on their research (including the

artistic expression of the student’s specific ‘Spirit’ quality)

4.     Memorize Galatians 5:22-23 (New Living Translation – NLT)

Weeks:  January 25  and February 1, 2016

Class time will be devoted to discussing the scope and content of the research synopsis sheet, the research paper and oral presentation, providing ample computer time for research, and understanding the grading rubric, for the components of this project.

        Week of February 8 – 12, 2016

A 5 – 10 minute oral presentation (including the artistic expression component) will be given, in class

The intent of this research project is for each student to achieve a more in-depth understanding of this Biblical truth, and because of the very significant personal application

that can be extracted from these verses, it can be a powerful and meaningful time well spent in the lifelong spiritual development of each student.

ELA ~ Ms. Kirk ~ January 25-29, 2016

This week we will continue working on verb tense.  Students will prepare a short lesson on the verb tense assigned to them and present their lesson to the class.  We will discuss the importance of verb strategies and how to incorporate that in writing. 

Physics January 18 - 22, 2016

This week we will learn about current electricity and circuits - we will spend two weeks (at least?) exploring this form of energy and I can't wait!

Bible Class ~ Ms. Kirk ~ January 19 - 22, 2016

As we return to school on Tuesday, January 19, after our Monday holiday, our   final section of study in the Epistle to the Galatians will focus on the ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ (Gal. 5:22-23).  An overview of our study will include:

2.    GALA Homeroom Grade 6 – 8 Class Project

Every year each homeroom designs a class project to

be in the silent auction.  This year our class has selected

to take a class photograph with a very creative design.

The details on this project are outlined in my email which includes an attachment of the design.
